New Idea pitches For Sharing Mobile Networks in Pakistan

Having a more planned investment of $100 million, Malaysia-based edotco Group has provided telecom providers in Pakistan a shared community of systems.
The team has mentioned the example of European nations, saying that they are after the same version of a shared network of operators in an attempt to offer solutions and limit prices.

It is going to lead to savings of tens of thousands of dollars that are invested installing parallel boards by various companies. The Malaysian company has already spent $200 million in setting up systems and plans a further shot of $100 million to installing more towers.

The four telecom operators, already functioning in Pakistan, have over 34,000 telecom businesses across the nation but with the advent of 4G and 5G, the demand for towers is very likely to rise.

By 2022, the amount of towers can probably go up from 17,000 so as to accommodate 4G and 5G data customers. A dismal reality is that 40 percent of those 34,000 towers are 300 yards apart, which causes wastage of $1 billion worth of capital as a result of presence of parallel towers at near distances.

Cell phone penetration in Pakistan stands at 74 percent, and it can be more than half of the population. There are 47.5 million net users and more than 35 million social media consumers.

“Data ingestion is forecast to increase seven days between 2018 and 2022, thus, the need for towers will also increase. The requirement of the hour would be to adopt a more collaborative approach with all of telecom companies so as to be prosperous at the 5G era,” Gayan Koralage, Director Group Strategy of edotco Group, informed the media.

He pointed out that with the advent of 4G and 5G, tower constructions could also have to be changed, therefore, tower-sharing are a requirement.

“To change from 3G to 4G, there has to be an increase in the amount of websites. If each operator has its own own website and towerthen it is going to end in overcrowding of towers, so therefore, telcos will have to adopt the contemporary theories being released by both most tower companies.”

A vital driver in the pursuit of digitalisation at the national level will be that the adoption of the latest technology that can enable unparalleled chances.

“We completely support the Digital Pakistan assignment of this authorities and keeping in view the population of the nation, the penetration of cellular technology and expanding demand for data transfer, I am certain that edotco will grow to be a significant player,” said Koralage.

Pakistan still lags behind from the digitalisation race as nations have made advancement in the past five years. In 2018, the 4G penetration in Malaysia was 55 percent whereas 4G coverage does not cross 50 percent in Pakistan.

It is rather hard to imagine the implementation of smart city versions in the metropolitan telescope. Koralage, nevertheless, claimed that this might change. “The future appears bright to me personally and also the connectivity system is currently strengthening in Pakistan. Pakistan is amongst top-five contributors to this rise of users and has 72 million 3G/4G subscribers.

“The tower depend from the nation is increasing also. At the last two years, 2,500 towers have been installed, where 1,500 towers belong into edotco Pakistan.

We are closely working together with all of four telecom operators, assisting them to expand the community, so enhancing the coverage nationwide. With enhanced coverage, there’ll be greater access as well.”

But initially, telecom companies had resisted the adoption of the idea of tower-sharing.

Edotco Pakistan Country Managing Director Arif Hussain said,”A decade ago, the mentality was distinct as telecom companies didn’t see tower-sharing for a beneficial alternative but today owing to opex (operational cost ) and capex (capital expenditure) pressures, it appears a rather viable approach”
