Rosstat estimated the number of Russians who adhere to a healthy lifestyle. It turned out that this is one in eight. During the survey, among others, factors of physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption were taken into account
Rosstat calculated the share of citizens who led a healthy lifestyle (HLS) during 2019 – their combined share throughout Russia was 12%.
This demographic indicator appeared in the federal statistical work plan at the end of December 2018. Statistics on it (RBC reviewed it) is published for the first time.
The national project “Demography”, whose budget is 3.11 trillion rubles, involves achieving such targets as an increase in the proportion of citizens leading a healthy lifestyle, and the expected duration of a healthy life up to 67 years. In accordance with the government’s decree, annual selective monitoring of the state of public health will be carried out in the framework of the national project “Demography” until 2024. According to Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, this will allow the government to see a “public reaction to social policy.”
Five official healthy lifestyle conditions for Rosstat
Lack of smoking.
The consumption of fruits and vegetables daily in an amount of at least 400 g.
Adequate physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of intense physical activity per week).
Normal salt intake (not higher than 5 g per day).
Alcohol consumption is not more than 168 g of pure alcohol per week for men and not more than 84 g for women.
The methodology for determining a healthy lifestyle (.pdf) was approved by Rosstat in March 2019.
The highest proportion of people leading a healthy lifestyle in 2019 was recorded in Ingushetia – 48.8%. In second place is Crimea with 29.2%, in third place is Adygea with 28.8%. Chuvashia (24.7%) and the Voronezh region (24.2%) were also among the five leaders in a healthy lifestyle. In Moscow, this figure is 8.8%, in St. Petersburg – 6.8%.
It is worth noting that data on the commitment of residents of various regions to a healthy lifestyle do not correlate with data from Rosstat on the proportion of people aged 70+ in the respective regions. According to the last indicator, the first three places are taken by Ryazan (12.2%), Tambov (12.1%) and Tula regions (12.1%). However, one of the leaders in a healthy lifestyle – the Voronezh region – is in the top 10 regions with the largest number of people 70+ with a share of 11.3%. In Ingushetia, where almost half of the leading HLS, the proportion of older people is 3.9%.
The Chukotka Autonomous Okrug became an outsider in terms of the population that adheres to the HLS, there are only 0.4% of them. The five with the lowest rates also include Tuva with 1.1%, Nenets Autonomous Okrug with 2.1%, Khabarovsk Territory with 2.2% and Trans-Baikal Territory with 3.3%. In Chukotka, the low proportion of people aged 70+ is 2.3%, in Tuva – 3.3%.
According to Rosstat
The survey was conducted in August 2019 in 60 thousand households among all household members. Over 131 thousand people took part in it, of which 56% were women and 44% were men.
The calculation was built on a multi-purpose territorial sample based on the 2010 census across Russia. In proportion to the population, the number of participants in each region was determined.
A leading researcher at the international laboratory of demography and human capital of the Institute of Applied Economic Research, RANEPA Andrei Korotaev believes that the low proportion of leading a healthy lifestyle in Russia causes the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
“Healthy consumption of vegetables and fruits is pulling down the overall share of the survey since there are few consumers of this desired 400 g in Russia. For a very large number of families, fresh fruits and vegetables are generally unavailable. Their low consumption is also an important factor in increased mortality, ”Korotaev explained. In his opinion, the low rate of Chukotka is explained by abnormal natural conditions, as well as “serious problems with smoking and drinking strong alcohol.”
